Overview

Generally, there are three reasons to conduct research; improve your characters Skill Level, obtain Components and to obtain Discoveries. In order to access the Research User Interface, you must access a crafting table for your superheros skill.

Research User Interface

Once the Research UI has been opened, in order to begin doing research (or experimenting), upgrades must be added.

There are a number of ways to places upgrades in the Research UI. It is important to note that you can only experiment on upgrades of your skill. There are a few ways to do this:

  1. Opening your Inventory Window (pressing "i") will highlight only those items which can be researched, these can be dragged to the Research Window or double-clicked to be automatically placed in the Research Window.
  2. Right clicking on the Research Window will bring up a selectable list of upgrades that can be researched. From there you can click on the upgrade and it will automatically place it in the Research Window.

If you want to remove an upgrade from the Research Window, all you have to do is right click the upgrade and select remove.

Elements

Once an upgrade (or multiple upgrades) have been added, the Research UI will change.

Upgrade Research Detail

To the right of the upgrade (icon and name) will appear a number of stars (not always present, but there is one in the example to the right) and a grouping of different icons. The icons represent the components that the item can be broken down into and the stars represent the quality of the upgrade.

Potential Components

At the bottom of the Research UI will be another set of images in a row. These represent all the components that the upgrade can be broken down into. When more than one upgrade is added to the window, the numbers in the boxes will be the total of all the components from up above. If just one upgrade is added to the Research UI, then these totals will be the same as the ones up above.

It is important to note that just like the message says above these, you will only receive some of those components shown.

Rating

At the very bottom of the Research UI is the rating bar. Upgrades that are higher quality will have better ratings and adding additional upgrades will also improve the rating. As items are placed or removed from the Research UI, the experiment rating will increase or decrease depending on the quality of the upgrade.

Experiment Button

Once an upgrade is added to the Research UI, the experiment button in the lower right have corner becomes highlighted. When you are finished placing all the upgrades that you want to research, click the experiment button in order to conduct the research.

Overflow Bag

After you have experimented, the broken down components will be placed in an Overflow Bag (at right) as opposed to being placed directly into your Inventory. Once in the Overflow Bag, you can select which items you would like to take individually, or take all.

Experiment Ratings

The purpose of the rating bar is so that successful experiments can improve your skill and award Discoveries. A successful experiment is considered to be have a rating of 4/5 or 5/5.

Successful experiments will increase your skill level more than the lower rated experiments AND have the chance to award discoveries.

Upgrade Quality

In order to get improve ratings, you need to place upgrades of better quality and more of them (if these are lesser quality) in the Research Window. Quality upgrades are denoted by the number of stars to the immediate left of the component breakdown of the upgrade. The higher the number of stars, the better the quality and the better the rating. Generally speaking, 1 star starts you out at a rating of 1/5 while 5 stars starts at a rating of 5/5, etc.

Adding upgrades past a rating of 5/5 won't increase the chances of a getting discoveries. Therefore, when this rating is reached, it is best to experiment.

All other things being equal (rarity and level) primary upgrades are of better quality than secondary upgrades. For example it will take fewer primary upgrades to get a 4/5 rating than it will with secondary upgrades.

Discoveries

Primary Article: Discoveries
Ratings of 4/5 and 5/5 will have the chance to yield the top discovery that is appropriate for that Skill Level. But it is possible at the higher skill levels to earn lower level discoveries with lower success ratings.
